JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A teenage girl was shot in the abdomen during a dispute in Northwest Jacksonville Tuesday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, as the girl is now recovering at a local hospital.
JSO's Sergeant Lloyd says at approximately 5:45 a.m., officers responded to the 5600 block of Mahalia Drive in reference to the girl who was shot. He says the girl was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and "she is currently in surgery."
A dispute "between known individuals" escalated which then led to gunfire and in turn, injured the girl, according to Lloyd. He says adults were present during the dispute as well as another teenager, a boy.
JSO says two people are in custody, there are no outstanding suspects and "there is no further threat to the community" in relation to this incident.
Detectives were on scene looking for witnesses and searched the area for possible video surveillance, Lloyd says, as an investigation in the incident is ongoing.
Police did not release the identity of the teenage girl, the identity of those present during the dispute, nor the names of those in custody.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call JSO's non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers 1-866-845-TIPS.
