JSO says there were "approximately 50-60 shell casings" that were left on the ground at the scene following the shooting.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was shot in the Highlands area of Jacksonville Wednesday morning while he was sitting inside of a vehicle, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO's Sergeant Lloyd says around 9 a.m., officers responded to the 1900 block of Bucknell Avenue in reference to a call received about the unidentified man in his late-20s who was shot. Lloyd says the man was hospitalized at a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and is currently undergoing surgery, after he was shot multiple times in the upper torso and head. The man also lives in the area, according to JSO.

Police say they do not know if the suspect or suspects approached the man in a vehicle or on foot. Lloyd says there were "approximately 50-60 shell casings" that were on the ground following the shooting that came from an unknown model of a rifle.

JSO says they do not have any suspect information as well as any information on what led up to the shooting but, say that witnesses saw a burgundy sedan flee from the scene. However, Lloyd says it is "unknown if this is a suspect vehicle or just a passerby vehicle at this time."

Lloyd also says JSO's detectives were on scene earlier, canvassing the area for potential surveillance video and were speaking to witnesses.
