Jacksonville man shot while trying to purchase cellphone

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office encourages anyone making an exchange with someone they don't know, to use police district substations as a meeting location.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was shot in the 200 block of Sunshine Street in Jacksonville while trying to buy a cellphone, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday, a man and his brother were meeting someone they did not know to purchase several cellphones, police said.

When they arrived to the meeting place, "several" suspects with firearms approached their car and tried to rob them.

The brothers began to drive away from the area, but the suspects fired in the direction of the car.

The victim was hit in the arm and chest. His injuries are not life-threatening, according to JSO.

JSO encourages anyone making an exchange with someone they don't know, to use police district substations to conduct the exchanges.

The substations are open to the public during normal business hours, 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and officers frequently come and go from the area.

If anyone who uses the substation as a place to do exchanges feels unsafe, they can call (904) 630-0500 for assistance from officers, who are nearby.

Police said using the substation would lessen the likelihood of a robbery or crime occurring during an exchange.
