Jacksonville man accused of paying mistress to help murder wife

Velvet Burns was found dead inside a home in the 8800 block of Doris Lane on May 8 at 1:20 p.m.

A Jacksonville man and the woman he was reportedly having an affair with are facing second-degree murder charges after his wife was found stabbed to death inside a home on the Westside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Velvet Burns was found dead inside the home in the 8800 block of Doris Lane on May 8 at 1:20 p.m., JSO said during a news conference on Monday.

Police interviewed the victim's husband, suspect Jerry Burns, 50, who said he left the home at 3:30 a.m. that morning and was working in Tallahassee at the time.

An investigation into the murder ensued and police discovered Jerry Burns was reportedly having an affair with another suspect, 30-year-old Amanda Love.

JSO said Love was at the crime scene that morning and possessed property belonging to Velvet Burns.

Love reportedly told police Jerry Burns offered her $5,000 to take other suspects to the scene to commit the murder, JSO said. Jerry Burns reportedly wanted the murder to look like a burglary.

Love also said she was promised more money by Jerry Burns after the murder and the money would be taken from Velvet Burns' life insurance policy.

JSO said the case is still active and more arrests are imminent.
