JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The man convicted in a 2019 homicide in the Allendale area of Jacksonville has been sentenced to life in prison.

Daishawn Brown, who was 21 at the time, was identified by police after they found his DNA under the victim's fingernails.

The victim was found dead with a gunshot wound in the street at the intersection of West 16th Street and Prospect Street.

Two witnesses told police that Brown confessed the murder to them. They also said another man named Markel Gunder was involved -- Gunder died of an unrelated cause before he could be tried in the case.

When Brown's DNA was discovered on the victim, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office brought him in for questioning. This led to his arrest.

While in prison on July 21, 2023, Brown was also charged with battery in a detention facility. Police reports say he and another inmate were seen beating up an inmate. This case has not gone to trial yet.

A jury found Brown guilty on the murder charge on May 1.

He will not be eligible for parole.
