JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said one of his employees was responsible for the death of a man killed in a car wreck on Nov. 12. Corrections officer CashiusEdwards, a seven-year member of JSO, is charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide in the fatal wreck that occurred just before 2 a.m. at South Lane and San Juan avenues.
During a news conference Tuesday, Waters said the victim was driving southbound on South Lane Avenue and Edwards was traveling northbound "at a very high rate of speed," Water said. Both drivers were approaching San Juan Avenue. When the victim attempted to turn left on San Juan, Edwards' vehicle crashed into the front portion of the victim's and it overturned.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Edwards suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators determined Edwards was under the influence and charged him with the two second-degree felonies. He was booked into the Duval County jail.
The sheriff's office is not releasing the name of the victim.
