Investigation underway after baby dies at Clay County Sheriff's Office deputy's home

ID=74852088ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A baby girl — only 4 months old — died in a Clay County Sheriff's Office deputy's home Wednesday.

Braelyn Hamilton was born June 18. She was 18 weeks and 6 days old when she died at Deputy Steven Mosley's home on Longwood Street in Orange Park.

No cause of death has been announced, but the Sheriff's Office is investigating the death, as is the state Department of Children and Families.

Mosley works for the Sheriff's Office detention bureau.

Because Mosley is a police officer, an incident report didn't include his contact information as its exempted from public record. The Florida Times-Union was not able to get in touch with him, his wife or the parents of Braelyn.

A previous Sheriff's Office incident report from September said a neighbor had reported to the Department of Children and Families that Mosley and his wife were illegally running a daycare. The department said, at the time, that it was investigating that claim, but Mosley said the children his wife watched were relatives.

That neighbor, the report said, had reported Mosley and his wife to the department at least three times before, Mosley told deputies.

A Department of Children and Families spokeswoman couldn't say what any of those prior investigations revealed.

"The department has opened a death investigation and is looking into the circumstances surrounding this tragic case (including any allegations regarding a daycare)," said spokeswoman Michelle Glady. "The department has had no prior contact with this child. Death investigations are posted on our child fatality website upon completion. Additional information is confidential at this time."
