JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville sheriff's officers and armored SWAT vehicles were lining the road outside the Summerwind Apartments complex Wednesday night. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has now confirmed that there was a standoff at the scene, which is in the 5200 block of Timuquana Road.
Officers fired shots and one person was killed. He has now been identified as 26-year-old Paton John Pinette.
Police say that at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Pinette robbed his grandfather's business and stole a revolver. He shot the gun before leaving. His grandfather reported the incident to police but Pinette was not apprehended.
Then on Wednesday afternoon around 3 p.m., Pinette's neighbor called 911 to report that he had been threatening her.
The woman said she was gardening at the apartment complex on Timuquana Road when Pinette said, "It's a bad day to be a gardener." He was holding a revolver and pointed it at her, police said.
Pinette went back to his apartment and police responded there. This is when the standoff began.
"They attempted to make contact with him, while trying to do that, Mr. Pinette shot at officers at least two times. Our officers fired back," Director Mark Romano said.
JSO says the SWAT team responded and after several minutes of negotiating with Pinette, police said that he walked out of his front door armed with a knife and a revolver.
"He came out in an aggressive manner and when he went to lift the gun, a SWAT officer shot him," Romano said.
JSO says Pinette was killed.
Family spoke to First Coast News, saying Pinette was 26 years old. He lived by himself. Family says he was carrying a gun because he was bullied at work. They provided pictures of Pinette as well.
This is the 13th officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year. JSO says three officers fired shots.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating. The State Attorney's Office is conducting its own investigation.
