JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was hospitalized after a shooting inside a Walgreens on Dunn Avenue Monday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Police said the incident began as a dispute between a father and son, and ended with the son producing a firearm and shooting the father.
The shooting occurred inside the Walgreens located in the 800 block of Dunn Avenue around 4 p.m. Monday.
Officers responded to a reported person shot at the location and found the victim, a man in his 60s, suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. The victim is listed in non-life-threatening condition at a local hospital, according to JSO.
An incident report states the victim believed he had been shot twice.
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue crews observed what appeared to be a shot to the lower back and another to his buttock, the report said.
The preliminary investigation determined the suspect, a man in his 30s, and the victim were engaging in a dispute inside the store and the suspect shot the victim.
The report indicates that the dispute was "over money the suspect owes the victim" but the victim "has since let it go."
However, the report added, "the suspect is still angry with the victim because the victim isn't speaking to the suspect any longer."
Several witnesses were inside the Walgreens at the time of the shooting, Scott said, and investigators are conducting interviews and looking through video surveillance.
"Everyone is accounted for, and there is no further danger to the community," said JSO Robbery and Violent Crimes Sergent Scott.
Scott would not confirm if the suspect was detained by police, and instead said investigators are working to determine exactly what happened. JSO told First Coast News on Tuesday that no arrests have been made.
The report stated the suspect was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment for his injuries sustained during the incident.
First Coast News Crime and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson explained what not to do if you see an altercation ensuing.
"If you see someone arguing, don't go and try to break it up, don't try and get between them, get as far away from them as you can, because you never know what's going to happen," Jefferson said. "You don't know if that person's angry at just that person or is angry with everybody in the world."
