WARE COUNTY, Ga. — Ware County has a Grinch on its hands.
A man was arrested Monday for breaking into a local elementary school and stealing Christmas presents over the weekend, according to the Ware County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities say Aaron Jacob Johnson, 35, broke into Wacona Elementary School located in the 3100 block of State Street early Saturday, damaging seven windows throughout the property.
Several wrapped Christmas presents were opened and the contents were stolen, including a Coach bag and a guitar, deputies said. Johnson was caught on camera holding the stolen property.
The presents were donated by community members, staff, families and teachers for children at the school. Some of the gifts included board games, books and blankets.
Christmas cards were also opened with items stolen, according to deputies.
“Crimes of this type are truly damaging at any time of year, but they are especially hurtful during the Christmas season,” said Sheriff Carl James. “Several of my Detectives have called the suspect’s behavior in this case as “grinch-like” in nature, and I can’t disagree.”
Upon viewing surveillance video of the burglary, detectives obtained multiple felony warrants for Johnson's arrest.
The sheriff's office was searching for Johnson throughout the weekend and ultimately located him Monday evening.
Right now, Johnson faces burglary charges and will likely face other charges as detectives further their investigation.
Thankfully, as a result of Johnson's arrest, all of the stolen gifts were recovered.
