JESUP, Georgia — A man from Jesup has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 years probation after he fatally shot and killed a 24-year-old man after a 'three-day meth binge,' according to a press release from District Attorney Keith Higgins' office.
Lanis Brown, 32, was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm while committing a felony.
The shooting happened on February 3, 2023. Brown was continuing his 'binge' with a group of people at a shed on Community Circle in Jesup. The victim, Zakkary Johnson, arrived later and the two began arguing.
The argument became physical. Police said the two were able to separate and end the physical conflict, but Johnson continued to argue with Brown.
Brown then took out a handgun and shot Johnson in the chest, killing him.
He fled the scene and was arrested four days later. He tried to claim self-defense, but the jury took just three hours to determine he was guilty of manslaughter.
