BRUNSWICK, Ga. — A man died after he was restrained by a school resource officer and a "concerned citizen" Tuesday afternoon outside Risley Middle School, according to the Glynn County Schools Police Department Chief Johnny Davis.
When asked for comment, Glynn County Schools referred First Coast News to comments Davis had made to the Brunswick News.
Davis told the Brunswick News that a concerned citizen alerted the Glynn County Schools Department that a man was behaving strangely while sitting on the sidewalk outside of the school, on Southport Parkway in Brunswick.
He said school was about to let out, so the officer went to talk to the man. The main "initiated physical contact."
The officer "subdued" the man with help from the concerned citizen. The man started to "have shallow breathing," and the officer called for emergency medical attention.
EMTs came to the scene and treated the man. He was then taken to the hospital, where he later died, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations.
The "concerned citizen" also hurt her ankle at some point.
GBI is investigating. They are working to find out who the man was, how he died and why he was outside of the school.
