Gallery: A look back on the disappearance, murder of 7-year-old Somer Thompson

Somer Thompson, 7, disappeared in Orange Park while walking home from school on Oct. 19, 2009, and her body was found two days later on Oct. 21.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — Monday marks 10 years since the body of 7-year-old Somer Thompson of Orange Park was found in a landfill in Folkston, Ga. 

Thompson disappeared while walking home from school on Oct. 19, 2009, and her body was found two days later on Oct. 21.

Three months later, in February 2010, 24-year-old Jarred Harrell was named a person of interest in Thompson's disappearance. 

He was extradited from Mississippi to face child pornography charges. At the time of Thompson's disappearance, Harrell lived in the same Orange Park neighborhood where Thompson went missing.

On March 26, 2010, Harrell was charged with Thompson's murder. He pled guilty in on Feb. 3, 2012. Harrell was given six life sentences.
