CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — A Florida murder suspect died by suicide Tuesday after a high-speed vehicle pursuit with law enforcement on Interstate 95 in Georgia, according to the Kingsland Police Department.

Patrol units responded to a vehicle reported stolen by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office traveling northbound on I-95 around 2:46 a.m.

Police said an officer tried to initiate a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle, but the driver fled the scene exceeding 120 miles per hour, prompting a high-speed chase.

The pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle veered off the side of the road and crashed through a metal fence before coming to a final stop in a wooded area along the highway, police said.

The driver, identified as Michael Alan Smith, was found dead in the vehicle from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to police.

Smith was wanted for murder by the Melbourne Police Department and had several other warrants for violent crimes.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office confirmed the vehicle Smith was driving was reported stolen from a South Florida gas station and video footage identified Smith at the scene.

Police said a law enforcement bulletin indicated Smith had active warrants out for violent crimes and made suicidal statements, including "I will not go back to prison."

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
