NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. — UPDATE: A false report from a student who allegedly saw a firearm at Fletcher High School Wednesday caused a "major disruption" to the school and law enforcement, according to Duval County Public Schools.
The school was placed on a Code Yellow Wednesday afternoon, following reports there was a firearm on campus. However, investigators determined that there was never a firearm on campus, rather, a student falsely reported seeing a firearm.
Fletcher High School Principle Dean Ledford said in an email to parents 3:54 p.m. Wednesday, "while I am thankful to share that there was never a threat to our school, I am extremely disappointed by the actions of the student who made the false statement."
The Neptune Beach Police Department previously said Fletcher High School was in a 'lock out' procedure after a student brought a Nerf gun to campus. Around noon, the police department said a '3rd party' gave them information about the student that had brought the handgun to the school, the post states.
First Coast News spoke with school police who say they had a person detained for questioning.
In the email to parents, Principle Ledford said making false statements is "unacceptable" and the school is working to implement "severe school disciplinary consequences" for false reporting.
"We request that you continue to tell your students to say something if they see something," Ledford wrote. "Please warn them of the negative consequences that arise when false statements are made.
