PALM COAST, Fla. — A Palm Coast man has been indicted by a grand jury on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the overdose death from March.
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office said Justin Maddox, 32, sold fentanyl to 40-year-old Jeremy Kocorowski, causing his death. First-degree murder charges stemming from distribution of a controlled substance is a capital offense in Florida.
On March 28, the agency received a call about an unresponsive man at an apartment complex on Bulldog Drive in Palm Coast, which is near Flagler-Palm Coast High School. Deputies found Kocorowski unresponsive in the kitchen, a release from FCSO said, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators found a substance that later tested as fentanyl near Kocorowski.
Maddox was noted as a person of interest in the investigation.
Detectives located Maddox later that night on Bulldog Drive and the Special Investigation Unit facilitated a sale with him. He was arrested on charges of trafficking fentanyl- 4-14 grams, possession of cocaine, and possession of oxycodone.
In his charging affidavit, deputies said Maddox told them "he was coming here to give fentanyl to his friend and hang out" and he was going to get paid.
Sheriff Rick Staly called Maddox a "poison peddler."
“We will continue to investigate and hold poison peddlers accountable if they provide the deadly dose of illegal drugs and send them away to prison,” Staly said in a press release.
