LAKE CITY, Fla. — Two people are recovering and a man is facing charges after a shooting ended in an hourslong standoff with law enforcement on Saturday night, according to the Lake City Police Department.
A release from Lake City police states around 8:05 p.m., officers responded to a reported shooting on NW Wilson Street.
When officers arrived, they found a victim who was shot in the stomach. As emergency medical technicians were administering aid to the victim, officers located a second victim who was also shot.
Police said the suspect, identified as Brooks Smith, retreated back inside the residence on the property after the shooting.
Officers established a perimeter around the residence and requested the Columbia County Sheriff's Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for assistance.
SWAT negotiators established communication with Smith, 40, who police said was "aggressive" toward law enforcement and fired shots at officers from inside the residence.
"Officers and deputies maintained composure and professionalism throughout the ordeal," police said in a release.
Smith was taken into custody after a five-hour standoff with law enforcement. He was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation before he was booked into the Columbia County Detention Center.
He faces two counts of attempted homicide, according to police.
“These men and women showed courage and dedication in the face of danger, while ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens,” said Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter.
Members of the Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Law Enforcement Division, Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, Lake City Fire Department and Columbia County Fire Department also assisted with the incident.
