JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Duval County Jail inmate has died after spending several months in the hospital.

Walter James Matthews, 49, was arrested on April 7 on charges of possession of illegal narcotics, possession of a firearm by convicted felon, aggravated stalking, written threats, resisting without violence, violation of injunction for protection against stalking and several other citations.

On July 21, he was taken to a local hospital for pre-existing medical issues, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

He died Friday 12:53 p.m. Police say "preliminary information" indicates that Matthews may have had an "undetermined medical episode" attributed to his medical conditions.

JSO says he was not involved in any use-of-force incidents.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
