Deputies: Suspects sought after Middleburg robbery turned shooting
Clay County Sheriff's deputies are searching for suspects after gunshots were reported in the 1700 block of Blanding Boulevard at some point, according to the Sheriff's Office.

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. -- Authorities are searching for four suspects wanted in connection to a robbery turned shooting at a Middleburg shopping center Wednesday night.

According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the 1700 block of Blanding Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. after gunshots were reported in the area.

The incident report states four males were running out of an AT&T store after stealing six cell phones when Deputy Mark Meartz, 32, saw them and chased them to their car in the parking lot of Mattress Firm. Maertz was approaching the males as they were getting in the car when one of them allegedly pointed a pistol at the deputy. Maertz then fired at the male and into the vehicle as they drove off. Meartz was not injured in the incident. It is unknown at this time if any of the suspects have been injured, according to CCSO.

CCSO says all four suspects were thin build and looked to be in their late teens to early 20s. They are wanted on charges of grand-theft and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
