ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH, Fla. - Surveillance video has been released of a brutal Sunday attack at the Sea Colony Security Office after a man took what appears to be an assault-type rifle and struck a guard several times, chasing him from the building to the front gate.
St. Augustine Beach Police officers arrived at 150 Sea Colony Parkway after getting a 911 call around 8:35 p.m. saying a man was attacking a guard. When they got to the office, they found obvious signs of a physical dispute, but no people.
The security guard has fled his post and the officer who arrived eventually met with the 46-year-old outside the office. The guard returned after seeing police get to the scene, police say.
Police saw obvious signs of physical trauma to the guard's face and had him taken to Flagler Hospital by fire rescue.
Additional law enforcement came to the scene, including deputies from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. A perimeter was set up in the surrounding areas and a suspect matching the guard's description was taken into custody.
Jake Andrew Dewerth, 19, of Ocean Palm Way in St. Augustine Beach, is charged with multiple crimes. These include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, but other charges are expected shortly as more evidence is gathered.
Dewerth is being held at the St. Johns County Jail without bond.
Anyone with information on this attack is asked to call St. Augustine Beach Police at 904-471-3600.
