Community remembers father killed outside his apartment

Thomas "Tony" Gordon was shot Saturday on Sophia Street. His is one of six shootings in the area in the past six days.

Police are still looking for suspects in the shooting death of a father in Woodstock.

Thomas "Tony" Gordon, killed Saturday, was father to a seven-year-old son, family said.

At a vigil held Wednesday, dozens called for justice while standing on the Sophia Apartments lawn where Gordon was gunned down.

Gordon's aunt, Vonette Nixon said they are still shocked by this senseless shooting.

"He was such a phenomenal young man, I would have never thought in a million years we would lose him this way," Nixon said. "He never deserved this, he didn't live his life like that. He worked, he was a good father."

Gordon's death is one of a string of shooting incidents in the last six days, all six in a less than one mile radius in the Lackawanna and Woodstock communities.

In those six shootings, two men and one woman died and three others were injured. Most of the involved suspects remain at large.

Neighbors are calling for attention to security in the area. Councilman Garrett Dennis for the district said he's been getting calls from neighbors concerned about the heightened violence.

"We can't police our way out of this. I've been getting calls as I talk to people throughout the weekend," Dennis said. "They do not feel safe and it's unfortunate."

Dennis said more attention to prevention is needed over an increase in law enforcement.

Meanwhile, Nixon hopes changes can make a difference for families like theirs.

"Unfortunately, you could be the next family, and I don't want no family to go through what we're going through right now."
