MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — A Middleburg woman has been arrested after her 4-year-old daughter shot herself, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened at a home in the 2400 block of Clover Avenue at 12:19 p.m. last Wednesday.

The child was injured when she grabbed a gun and it went off last Wednesday, CCSO said.

After an "in-depth" investigation by the State Attorney's Office and the Department of Children and Families, Darien Leigh Johns was arrested on charges of aggravated child neglect Monday.

An affidavit obtained by First Coast News states Johns "failed to provide the appropriate supervision to the victim" who obtained a firearm from a kitchen counter and accidentally shot herself in the abdomen, piercing her liver.

The child underwent emergency surgery, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Johns' bond is set at $50,003.
