MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — Two men are in custody after leading Florida Highway Patrol and the Clay County Sheriff's Office on a dangerous chase Tuesday.
At approximately 5:12 p.m. Dec. 26, troopers and deputies attempted to stop a stolen Hyundai Sonata heading north on State Road 21, making a sharp U-turn near Peppergrass Street at a high rate of speed, a police report said.
The driver, 20-year-old Andre Munoz and the passenger, 18-year-old Michael White, were charged with automobile theft. Munoz was charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, while White was charged with trespassing and resisting without violence.
The report said the car exhibited a "willful and wanton disregard for public safety" heading toward Henley Road and later County Road 220. Munoz and White ran traffic lights and drove toward opposing traffic, the report said. A deputy said Munoz tried to ram into a police vehicle during the pursuit.
The vehicle pulled over off of County Road 220 near Swimming Pen Drive and White and Munoz fled on foot, police said. White was arrested near 2110 County Road 220 and Munoz was arrested in the backyard of 16 harmony Hall Road not far from White.
