Deputies arrest Clay County man accused of using Grindr to rob people

Adam Ayers Jr., 18, was identified as the person of interest connected to multiple robberies using the dating app.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — The Clay County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man they said used dating app Grindr to lure three separate victims through the app and rob them.

Adam Ayers Jr., 18, was charged with attempted carjacking while carrying a firearm, armed robbery, kidnapping and battery with a deadly weapon.

Sheriff Michelle Cook said Saturday that tips from residents helped identify Ayers as the person of interest. She said the case is still ongoing and said victims can still come forward.

She said Ayers was arrested without incident Friday.

The sheriff's office said Ayers went under the name "Larry" and used a different profile every time. In each incident, the victims reported that he set up a meeting place in a secluded location and when the victims arrived, the man took out a gun and demanded cash.

In two of the incidents, Ayers forced the victim to drive to an ATM and withdraw cash from their accounts and transfer money to a CashApp account, police said.
