Bodycam: Officer-involved shooting of armed man accused of trying to meet with minor

New footage shows the shooting and arrest of an 18-year-old man accused of threatening the mother of a 13-year-old girl he was messaging "inappropriately."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released body camera footage from the shooting of an armed 18-year-old man accused of threatening a mother and her children with a gun after trying to meet up with the mother's 13-year-old daughter.

JSO said the mom discovered a chain of inappropriate messages between her 13-year-old daughter and a man named Cerry Banks. The mother then posed as her daughter and proposed to Banks that they meet up at a business on South McDuff Avenue the next morning, Nov. 11.

The mother arrived at the business around 7:30 a.m. with two of her children to confront Banks. JSO said the suspect lifted his shirt to show a gun in his waistband, telling them to the effect of, 'If you hear gunshots, you better duck,' because it's him shooting.

JSO said the mother called police for assistance. Shortly thereafter Officer G. Robinson responded and found Banks standing on an outside corner wall of a Popeyes near the drive-thru. The bodycam video shows Robinson exit his patrol car and immediately order Banks to put his hands up and turn around.

"Turn around," Robinson ordered. "Turn around. Turn your [explicit] the [explicit] around."

The video shows Banks slowly turn around but then adjust something around his waistband.

"Hey [explicit], Get your [explicit] hands up before I shoot your [explicit]," Robinson yelled.

The video then shows Banks running away from the officer.

JSO said Robinson chased Banks through a parking lot until Banks turned toward him with a gun in his hand. That's when Robinson fired about eight shots toward a fleeing Banks.

The 18-year-old dropped the gun in the parking lot and continued running.

Robinson called in other officers for assistance and they eventually located an injured Banks nearby inside a drainage pipe in a wooded area.

The shooting will be reviewed by the State Attorney's Office and then JSO will conduct an administrative investigation to determine policy compliance.

The body camera footage can be viewed on JSO's social media page.
