UPDATE: Clay County Courthouse secure after bomb scare

The suspicious backpack that caused alarm was determined not to be dangerous.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The video attached to this story is from a previous, unrelated report.

The Clay County Courthouse and surrounding area is secure after a bomb scare around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The courthouse, located at 825 N Orange Ave, and several nearby businesses had been evacuated due to a suspicious package as of 11:39 a.m.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office along with Green Cove Springs Police Department and the Clay County bomb squad were able to retrieve the item, which turned out to be a backpack, Lt. Dan Mala said.

The bomb squad determined that the contents of the backpack did not pose a threat.

An individual who was set to appear in court Tuesday hid the backpack outside the courtroom, Mala said. The backpack contained an item that the individual could not bring inside, so he left it behind.

No charges will be pressed against the individual and everyone involved is safe.
