JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An unidentified woman was found shot inside a parked vehicle at Our Community Club Park on Jacksonville's Westside Thursday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Around 6 a.m., JSO says a bystander was driving by the park, located at 6200 Old Middleburg Rd. South, when they noticed the vehicle with its lights on and what appeared to be bullet holes in the car. Police say the driver then called 911 and patrol officers as well as members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, responded to the scene where they pronounced the woman dead.
At this time, JSO says they are conducting an ongoing investigation and do not have a motive or suspect information to provide. In addition, the sheriff's office says they are currently going through an "area canvass," looking for potential witnesses and/or video surveillance.
“My wife heard gun shots about two o’clock this morning," said Bruce Arthur, who lives across the street from the park. "She said there was eight of them in rapid succession.”
Arthur says he managed to sleep through those gunshots his wife heard.
But, when he stepped out his front door first thing in the morning, he was greeted by a park full of police officers across the street.
Arthur says Our Community Club Park is pretty busy on the weekends with families at ballgames, but during the week, he says he's seen on-and-off issues at the park.
“I moved here in 1992 and I’d see five cars a day," said Arthur. "Now it’s a racetrack in front of my house. It’s easy access to commit a crime or do something illegal. People don’t want to talk about it, they want to resolve it with violence.”
While police dig for more information, Arthur says it’s a shame the investigation has to happen in the first place.
“We’re becoming a more violent society unfortunately," said Arthur.
Anyone with information regarding the incident, is asked to call JSO's non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
