67-year-old Putnam County man pleads guilty to shooting, killing his wife as she left for work

Welaka man Peter Hamilton will serve life in prison for killing his wife, Tina.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla — Peter Hamilton, who killed his wife more than a year ago, has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. He has been sentenced to life in prison.

On Nov. 1, 2023, Hamilton shot his wife, Tina Hamilton, in the back with a .38 revolver. She died at the scene.

Police say Tina Hamilton was getting ready to leave their home in Welaka and go to work. Her purse and coffee were already in the car, and she was in her work clothing.

Peter Hamilton retrieved his gun from his bedroom and shot Tina as she was getting into her car, police said.

He called 911 and reported that he shot Tina. First responders found her in the dining room and began treating her wounds, but they could not save her.

"She was my best friend. She knew everything about me," Tina Hamilton's son, John Phelps told First Coast News last year. "My mom was very outgoing, very active, she rode horses every weekend."

Tina is remembered by family as fun-loving, kindhearted and someone who never met a stranger.
