62-year-old inmate dies after four days in Duval County Jail

Police say that Robert Shaffer was found in "medical distress." He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 62-year-old inmate at the Duval County Jail died Sunday, after just four days in custody.

Robert Shaffer was found in medical distress by corrections officers Sunday shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Medical staff and officers administered CPR, according to JSO.

Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department crews took Shaffer to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

JSO says Shaffer had a "documented medical condition," and it does not appear he had "any contact with other inmates or officers that may have contributed to his medical emergency."

His cause of death has not been determined yet. The Medical Examiner's Office will investigate.

Shaffer was being held on armed burglary charges.

This is the 14th in-custody death in 2023.
