JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A two-year-old child died from his injuries after he was shot inside a Westside apartment complex Saturday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
JSO announced the death of 2-year-old Jayden James Piedra via Twitter at 7:21 p.m.
JSO said Piedra was shot inside a home at the Morning Side Apartments at 2401 Jammes Road at 10:16 a.m.
Piedra was rushed to UF Health in life-threatening condition, police said. He later died at the hospital. Family members told First Coast News that the shooting was accidental.
A woman who referred to Piedra as her "god baby" posted photos of the two of them together on Facebook, saying "My heart and everything is hurting. We had a bond like no other my precious god baby!"
Police have started interviewing people at the scene but said they are not looking for any suspects.
JSO reminds gun owners to make sure their firearms are secured in order to promote safety. Florida law states that anyone who stores or leaves a loaded firearm where a person under 16 years old could access it must do the following:
- Keep the firearm in a securely locked box or container;
- Keep the firearm in a location which a reasonable person would believe to be secure; or
- Secure the firearm with a trigger lock.
