19-year-old dies from gunshot wound in Lake City

The Lake City Police Department said officers were dispatched to NW Long Street after gunfire in the area was picked up by a gunshot detection system.

LAKE CITY, Fla. — A 19-year-old is dead after a shooting early Sunday morning in Lake City. 

According to the Lake City Police Department, at approximately 3:42 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to NW Long Street in reference to gunshots fired in the area that were picked up by a gunshot detection system. 

When officers arrived, they located 19-year-old Nicholas Rashard Whitehead suffering from a gunshot wound. 

Officers and first responders rendered aid to the victim who was then taken to Lake City HCA Hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

Investigators with the LCPD and the State Attorney's Office are speaking with possible witnesses and the victim's family. Police have not provided information on a possible suspect.

The deadly shooting comes just months after a 12-year-old girl was shot and killed while sitting in her home also located on NW Long Street. Investigators said the shootings are not related.
