17-year-old shot near Parkwood Heights Elementary, putting 3 schools on lockdown

The shooting occurred as the 17-year-old victim was walking down the street in the 1700 block of Lansdowne Drive, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

A teenager was shot multiple times near Parkwood Heights Elementary School in the Arlington area of Jacksonville Thursday, causing three Arlington schools to go on code red lockdown, police said.

The shooting occurred as the 17-year-old victim was walking down the street in the 1700 block of Lansdowne Drive around 2 p.m., the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

JSO said a silver sedan went by and someone in the car shot at him. The victim ran onto Parkwood Heights to take cover behind some cars, but the teen was shot multiple times, police said. The teen was transported to the hospital.

During the shooting, a glass in the front office of Parkwood heights was struck, but no students or staff were injured.

In response, school officials put Terry Parker High School, Arlington Middle School and Parkwood Heights Elementary on code red lockdown until the situation was under control.

Police said there was never an active shooter in the elementary school.

Parkwood Heights students were then transported to Terry Parker High for pickup.

Police are interviewing witnesses and the victim. The identity of the suspect isn't known at this time.
