'We just want to see her pull through': 17 lb dog 'Blue' found abandoned on Northside

The Jacksonville Humane Society is treating the dog until she is healthy enough to be placed with a foster or forever home.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Humane Society is sending out an urgent call for help after a dog was found abandoned, malnourished and barely able to stand in the Lem Turner Road area.

Blue is just 17 pounds and two years old.

“She was found by a kind citizen and they brought her here," Lindsay Layendecker, director of development with the Jacksonville Humane Society, said.

When Blue was first brought to the Jacksonville Humane Society on Thursday, she could not walk.

“She's probably going to need months of intensive care; we got her on fluids and special medicines. A lot of testing. We have to figure out if this is just from a lack of food or if she has an underlying condition," Layendecker said.

Blue will stay hospitalized at the shelter until she is healthy enough to be placed in a foster or forever home.

Shelter leaders say this time of year is the busiest here in the city of Jacksonville. Not only are they getting more intakes, but they also see an influx of kittens, leading to full shelters.

The Humane Society is looking for families to adopt, foster and volunteer at the shelters.

Officials remind pet owners to never abandon a pet outside, instead bring them to a local shelter.

As for Blue, she has a long road to recovery.

“We just wanna give this little girl the chance that she deserves, she has a really good fighting spirit and we just want to see her pull through," Layendecker said.

JHS said in a Facebook update Sunday morning that Blue can stand up, but is still wobbly on her feet.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported her journey. Our little bluebird is not out of the woods yet," JHS said on Facebook.
