JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — Women of all ages and surf levels hit the water Saturday morning for the 26th Annual Sisters of the Sea Surf Classic.
Abigial Remke was one of the competitors who showed off her best skills during this all-female surf contest at Jacksonville Beach.
“It’s cool to see everybody coming out to surf and donating to the community," Remke said.
‘Sisters of the Sea’ has been hosting these competitions for 26 years. The nonprofit started in Jacksonville in 1998 with the goal of encouraging women participation in surfing and raising funds to support women battling breast cancer.
For young girls watching on the sand, they get to see just how talented female surfers are.
“Growing up, there were only a handful of girl surfers. So, I was always around the boys but it’s so much fun coming to Jacksonville and seeing all these girls and just everyone having a great time everyone cheering each other one," Remke said.
The event was not just about the action going on in the water. On the sand, there was a raffle and donations booth with all the proceeds are going to breast cancer awareness organizations across the First Coast.
“Bosom Buddies which is Jacksonville women’s center, we have BEAM which is Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministries… and the also Mamo-GLAMS, which is also a local charity," Rebekah Watson, an organizer, said.
Over $144,000 has been raised to date.
"Everyone coming out, having fun, donating, it really builds the community up as well," Remke said.
