Community mourns death of Putnam County deputy

A family and a law enforcement community are coming to terms with the death of Putnam County deputy Brandee Smith.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla.—A family and a law enforcement community are coming to terms with the death of Putnam County deputy Brandee Smith.

The mother of three was in what is being called a boating accident early Friday morning near Welaka, Fla. Her body wasn't found until the next day in the St. Johns River.

Since the accident, the people of Putnam County have been coming together to provide support for her family and coworkers.

Flags fly at half staff outside the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, as deputies wear badges with black bands, signs of a law enforcement community in mourning.

"They are taking it hard. It's going to be a huge loss for them. As we support Brandee's family, it's important we continue to support our employees to see they get the services they need," said Captain Joe Wells.

Captain Joe Wells said those who worked on Smith's shift have been given time off as they try to come to terms with her unexpected death.

"We have relieved them of duty at this point. I can imagine they're anxious to return to duty and serve the citizens of Putnam County, just as Brandee would want them to," added Wells.

A difficult time. But with hope - knowing Deputy Smith's legacy will live on.

"You can watch these rookie deputies work and see little bits and pieces of Brandee in every one of them. I think that's how she will live on for us, through the young deputies she's mentored and trained." said Wells.

If you would like to help the family of Smith, you can make a donation through the 1024 foundation.A special foundation that helps Putnam County law enforcement and their families.

You can contact the Putnam County Sheriff's Office for more information.

Smith's funeral is open to the public and slated for 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Florida School of the arts Auditorium on St. Johns River State College's campus in Palatka.

Law enforcement asks that if you attend you refrain from taking photos or video inside the auditorium.
