Community action group plans rally in Jacksonville man's mysterious death

Dozens gathered Thursday night in Springfield calling for accountability in the fatal shooting case of a young Jacksonville father.

Dominic D.J. Broadus, II died following a shooting in Macclenney on February 3. A redacted police report lists two other people involved, but no arrests have been made.

Family questions lack of arrest in fatal shooting involving deputy's son

The Jacksonville Community Action Committee, a social activist group, announced a rally to be held on April 21 calling for transparency and 'Justice for DJ'.

FDLE is investigating the case after being contacted by Baker County officials following the shooting, according to FDLE spokesperson Gretl Plessinger. A county official told First Coast News a man escorted from the scene by police is the son of a retired Baker County Sheriff's Office deputy and named on the offense report, but further details are redacted.

Anita Baker, a former Baker County resident, attended previous town hall meetings organized by JCAC in Macclenney.

"The first [town hall] we had about 135 people, and a little over 100 at the second one," Baker said. "[Attendees in Baker County] were very energetic, they had a lot to say but were very reluctant because they feel that they are going to be retaliated against."

Broadus' father, Dominic Broadus, Sr. called the support from Jacksonville residents encouraging and hopes it will help bring more answers about his son's death.

JCAC backed similar campaigns in the shooting death of Keegan Roberts, killed in 2017 during a dispute with his neighbor, and Vernell Bing, shot by police in 2016 after leading officers on a destructive vehicle chase. In both of those cases, the State Attorney's office found insufficient evidence to bring charges.
