DARBY BOROUGH, Pa. (WPVI) -- A one-month-old girl is in the hospital after losing up to 25% of her face in a ferret attack.

The child was placed in her care seat and then left on the floor while her parents were in the upstairs of the Darby home. The three ferrets escaped their cloth-like cage and began to chew the girl's face.

When the parents heard the child screaming they came downstairs to find that she had suffered severe injuries to her lips, nose and other parts of her face.

The parents' four other children are now in the custody of Child & Youth Services and the baby is listed in stable condition at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She will likely need multiple surgeries over the years to repair her face.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time as the incident is under investigation.
