LAKE CITY, Fla. — The Columbia County Sheriff's Office took the necessary steps to thwart a prison escape plot set in motion by at least one inmate at Columbia County Detention Facility, according to authorities.
An ongoing investigation has already uncovered several handmade tools that would be used for an escape by inmates, according to CCSO. Detention deputies learned of a potential escape on Tuesday, which led to the investigation, according to a media release.
CCSO isolated the 15-20 inmates that would have had access to the homemade tools (pictured), according to the authorities. The inmate(s) has not been arrested or charged, but could face a misdemeanor or a felony allegation, according to a CCSO spokesperson.
"I'm proud of all the detention personnel at the jail, their diligence prevented this escape and kept our community safe," said Sheriff Mark Hunter.
The investigation remains open, according to the release.
