Florida gas prices drop nearly 20 cents

The state's gas price average fell from $3.55 to $3.36 a gallon in 10 days.

FLORIDA, USA — Florida gas prices have dropped nearly 20 cents after an "erratic" summer, a AAA gas price brief reports.

The state average fell from $3.55 a gallon to $3.36 per gallon on Sunday after a 10-day price plummet of 18 cents. Sunday's average is the lowest daily average price since July 1, according to the brief.

"Futures prices have fallen the past two weeks, to the lowest levels in more than a month," said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins in a news release. "This lowered the cost of gasoline production. However, Florida gas prices have been erratic this summer and an early week rally is not out of the question."

Sunday's average is 28 cents less than the highest price in Florida this year, $3.64, recorded on May 1.

Since June 24, a barrel of US. Crude oil has reduced by $3.17 from $81.54 to $78.37, according to Business Insider.

The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro area has a current average of $3.33, three cents lower than the current average. Last week, the area's average was at $3.53, according to AAA gas prices.

AAA recommends a number of ways for Floridians to save money on gas:

  • Combine errands to limit driving time.
  • Shop around for the best gas prices in your community.
  • Pay with cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
  • Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the car improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.
  • Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduce fuel economy.

June saw record-low gas prices, followed by a 15-cent spike during its last week.
