JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Boaters across Florida get into more accidents during the month of July than any other time during the year, according to a statewide report. With recent boater rescues across our First Coast, we're On Your Side diving into some boating safety tips for those hitting the water.
According to the latest boating accident report by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in 2022 in Duval County, 12 people were injured and one person died from a boating accident.
Just last weekend in Nassau County, a man spent nearly an hour in the water after his boat sank miles from the shore near Fort Clinch. The Nassau County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit said then that life jackets and a whistle would prevent a similar incident like that from happening again.
Also, on a sinking vessel, do not abandon ship. Nassau County deputies say staying near the boat will make it easier for them to find you.
Some other tips from the FFWCC for boater safety include paying attention while operating the boat, drive sober and check safety gear. Half of all boating deaths are due to drowning, so wearing a life jacket at all times is the first step in boating safety.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers boater safety courses, both in-person and free courses.
