New JEA headquarters opens Monday

The lights on the 7-story, $100 million building flicked on Sunday night ahead of Monday's grand opening.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — JEA is 'powering up' its new building.

The location at the intersection of Pearl and Adams Streets in downtown Jacksonville opens Monday morning after four years of planning and construction.

JEA spokesperson Karen McAllister says not only is it a new spot, but it's also a new experience for customers.

The highlight - no more lines.

"We'll have a virtual cue, so customers will be able to check in from their phone, their car or once they arrive," said McAllister.

The headquarters has two kiosks customers can use to streamline bill payments.

The new headquarters can handle up to a category 3 hurricane and work has already started on a southside location that will stand up to a category 5 hurricane.

As for the old building on Church Street -

"We are preparing to find a new home for a lot of the furniture at the old building and preparing to list it for sale," said McAllister.

That means the old building could host another new face in downtown.

While JEA opens one spot and tries to sell the other, McAllister says it won't have any impact on customer's bills.

In fact, they may even see their bills go down in the immediate future.

"When the cost of fuel goes down, we are able to pass along those savings to our customers," said McAllister.

McAllister recommends for customers to park in the courthouse parking garage across the street. JEA will validate parking.

She says JEA sees around 400 customers per day at its headquarters.
