2024 Florida Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday: Here are the items you can buy to stay storm-ready

The first period of the tax holiday runs from Saturday, June 1, until Friday, June 14.

FLORIDA, USA — Beginning Saturday, June 1, Floridians can start getting ahead of the upcoming hurricane season with the start of the 2024 Florida Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday.

Between Saturday, the official start of Hurricane season, and Friday, June 14, all storm-related supplies can be purchased without any sales tax added. 

This covers a variety of items for consumers, including generators, batteries and pet items.

Here's a list of discounted items you can purchase during this week-long tax holiday, according to the Florida Department of Revenue:

$3,000 or less

  • Portable generators used to provide light, communications or preserve food

$100 or less

  • Tarps and other flexible, waterproof sheeting
  • Ground anchor systems
  • Portable pet kennels and carriers
  • Dry dog/cat food that weighs 50 pounds or less
  • Over-the-counter pet medications

$70 or less

  • Smoke detectors/alarms
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Carbon monoxide detectors

$60 or less

  • Non-electric food storage coolers
  • Portable power banks

$50 or less

  • Radios (portable, self-powered, two-way or weather-band)
  • Fuel takes (gas or diesel)
  • Rechargeable batteries (AA-cell, AAA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, six-volt and nine-volt)

$40 or less

  • Portable, self-powered light sources
  • Pet beds

$25 or less

  • Cat litter (weighs 25 pounds or less)

$20 or less

  • Reusable ice
  • Pet leashes, collars and muzzles
  • Pet pads

$15 or less

  • Manual can openers
  • Pet food/water bowls
  • Cat litter pans
  • Pet waste disposal bags
  • Hamster/rabbit substrate

$10 or less

  • Wet dog/cat food (sold individually or in a box or case)

Items not applicable for the sales tax holiday consist of commercial pet supply purchases, sales in a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment or airport, and the rental of any of the eligible items in the holiday period.

If you don't get all the items you need for the upcoming sale, a second Disaster Preparedness Tax Holiday is happening from Aug. 24 through Sept. 6.
