JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —
As Women's 'HERstory' Month draws to a close, First Coast News takes a moment to celebrate a remarkable woman who has not only shattered glass ceilings, but has also triumphed over adversity in more ways than one.
“I think about all the women that came before me who paved the way for me to be Jacksonville's mayor,” said Mayor Donna Deegan.
Deegan's journey is one of resilience, courage, and a relentless commitment to making a difference.
From her early days as a journalist to her current role as the first female mayor of Jacksonville, she has faced numerous challenges head-on, including battling cancer not once, but three times.
As mayor, Deegan has championed initiatives focused on healthcare, education and economic development. It's worth noting that her administration is predominantly comprised of women.
“It was always my intent to make people's lives better whether that was from the anchor desk or after I was diagnosed with cancer, my goal has always been to help the people of Jacksonville," Deegan told First Coast News.
