JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The way he runs through the play yard and leaps into Samatha Ahen's arms, it's hard to believe that when Spirit was brought into Jax Humane by a good samaritan, he couldn't even walk.
Spirit is one of more than 9,000 animals that come through the doors each year at the Jacksonville Humane Society. Many of them need some type of medical care before they can be adopted into homes. When Spirit was brought to Jax Humane, he was severely underweight, his hair was falling out and he was weak and terrified.
But Samantha Ahen with Jax Humane said each day he began to improve, and his resilience earned him the name Spirit.
"He has been through a lot and as you can see it hasn't stopped him from being the most playful, loving pup. He is not worried about any people he just wants to give love and be a silly little puppy and I find that really inspiring," she says.
The dogs and cats brought to Jax Humane come in with anything from traumatic injuries like being hit by a car to an illness like heartworms.
"The medical fund allows us to care for those animals and not turn them away just because they are suffering from something," tells Ahen.

Also, Spirit is ready for adoption! He is dog-friendly and would love his forever home if you are interested. You can meet him at the Jacksonville Humane Society on Beach Boulevard.
