Is pizza the answer for the San Marco Theatre?

What's new for 1996 San Marco Blvd. after Flying Iguana has backed out.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — San Marco Theatre is trading the silver screen for silver trays, with the announcement that Electric Pizza Dough Co. heading into the historic building.

Chef Tom Gray announced the restaurant concept this week. He runs Prati Italia and Town Hall, located in the St. Johns Town Center and San Marco respectively. The restaurant is tentatively set to open in the fourth quarter of 2024.

“San Marco is my home, and we are inspired by the opportunity to preserve the soul of the building and breathe new life into the interior with stylistic touches that mesh our concept with the beauty and presence of the theatre,” Gray said in a press release.

Flying Iguana's Al Mansur originally had a lease in place. He announced plans to open in early 2024, but had to pull out, the Jacksonville Daily Record reported.

The theater showed its last film on New Year's Day in 2023 after 85 years in business.
