Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens spokesperson, J.J. Vitale, has given First Coast News an update one day after a zookeeper was seriously injured after being struck by a rhino on Tuesday.
Vitale says that the injured zookeeper was released this morning from the hospital and that the rhino, Archie, is doing fine... but is very naughty she added.
She says that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission came out Tuesday but has not been there Wednesday yet to investigate.
On Tuesday a female zookeeper came into contact with the Southern white rhino during a routine training session. During a press conference, the zoo announced that the zookeeper was struck by Archie's horn.
After the attack, the zookeeper was awake and responding to first responders. She was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, according to Tom Francis with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
Archie is a 50-year-old rhino, known to be one of the zoo's most beloved animals. He's been at the Jacksonville Zoo since 1975.
Archie is also described to be the biggest rhino at the exhibit, weighing about 4,000 pounds.
