JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — You can get your child a free test Monday that could save their life.
First Coast News is teaming up with the nonprofit Who We Play For to give free heart screenings to people 10 to 22-years-old. It’s estimated that one in 300 young people have an undetected heart condition that could put them at risk for sudden cardiac arrest.
An electrocardiogram, known as an EKG or ECG, only takes a few minutes. In it, electrodes are placed on the chest to measure electrical pulses. Without the test, most of the time there are no warning signs of a heart condition, and the problem is missed 96% of the time with a stethoscope.
Duval County Public Schools will provide transportation for its students to be screened from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., anyone aged 10 to 22 can get a free heart screening.
Heart screenings will take place at Flex Field, located at 1 Daily's Place in Downtown Jacksonville. Register for the event here.
