Man who hit, killed Jacksonville woman in wrong-way crash gets 20 years

Cassidy Mongeon, 23, was gravely injured when Johnathan Davis hit her with his car and left the scene in 2021, later dying at the hospital.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Clay County man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for hitting Cassidy Mongeon, 23, with his car and leaving the scene in 2021. Johnathan Davis learned his sentence in a Duval County courtroom Tuesday, with Mongeon's family in attendance.

Davis turned himself the day after the accident and was charged with hit-and-run and traffic violations. At the time, Davis had amassed 39 traffic violations in 20 years, and had four open cases pending against him.

"Johnathan Davis has gotten away with so much over these years without ever being held accountable for his actions and I'm glad we finally saw that today," Mongeon's brother, Pat, said.

"She [Cassidy] was a fighter and I am so glad that we could show up today, fight for her and get some form of justice."

Mongeon was a beloved daughter and known in Jacksonville for her job working as a bartender at Tabula Rasa Brewing. She died at the hospital after Davis hit her. Due to her injuries, her parents had to tell doctors to take her off life support.

"The only thing that was keeping her alive were the machines - that were soon to be disconnected by my wife and I with our signatures. We had to kill our own daughter. We had to kill her," Mike Mongeon said.

Mongeon’s family overcome with emotion in the court room as the judge read Davis's sentence and listened to an apology from Davis and victim impact statements from her family.

When Davis said, "I'm sorry," Mongeon's father, Michael interrupted him angrily, and ended up leaving the courtroom.

Mongeon's parents described their daughter as compassionate, saying she fought for what she believed in.

Her family had hoped for a 23-year sentence for Davis, but they say they are happy with the result. They could be seen crying and hugging after the result was read.
