JSO: Man arrested for murder in connection to apartment complex shooting in Jacksonville

Benjamin Groover, 54, is currently being held on no bond at the Duval County Jail, as he's accused of murdering 25-year-old Johnnie Jackson in September 2023.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was arrested for murder Wednesday in connection to a homicide that happened at an apartment complex off of Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville in September 2023, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Benjamin Groover, 54, is currently being held on no bond at the Duval County Jail, as his first court appearance takes place at 9 a.m. Thursday, jail records show.

JSO says on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023, officers responded to the Sands on Beach Apartment Homes, located at 11900 Beach Blvd., at approximately 10 a.m. in reference to a shooting. When officers arrived, they found 25-year-old Johnnie Jackson suffering from "at least" one gunshot wound, JSO's news release states.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the apartment complex and took Jackson to a local hospital where he died after "life-saving measures" were unsuccessful, the release states.

In September, the sheriff's office said there were reports that the shooter may have been seen inside the apartment complex, which led investigators to contact a SWAT team to help secure and search the area. However, a suspect was not found or identified at the time.
