JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jaguars made a move to improve their play on special teams and offense in free agency.
The team announced the signing of former Washington Redskins tight end Niles Paul on Wednesday.
The two-year deal is worth $5 million in base salary but has just under $4 million in incentives, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.
“This is a fresh start for me in Jacksonville and an amazing opportunity to continue to do the thing that I love, and that is football,” Paul said in a team-issued press release.
“This is a good fit for me for a lot of different reasons, with special teams being the primary reason. I also look at it as an opportunity to showcase my abilities as an offensive weapon. I’m excited to get started.”
Paul, 28, spent all seven of his previous NFL seasons in Washington. The Nebraska alum has caught 68 passes for 856 receiving yards and two touchdowns during his career.
The 6-foot-1, 242-pound tight end was a fifth-round pick in 2011. He was the Redskins' special teams captain in 2017. He has played the majority of his snaps on special teams throughout his career.
Paul missed the entire 2015 season with a dislocated ankle.
